OUR HISTORY
Wellington Baptist Church (WBC) is one of the oldest baptist churches in the South West of England.
For a detailed and lengthy account of our history a booklet has been produced by Harry G. Taylor entitled "Wellington Baptists and their neighbours in the seventeenth century."
Some copies may still be available for sale from The Church Office for the cost of £2, plus postage and packing.
We hope to have this available online on this site soon (2007/2008)
The beginnings of WBC could date from 1686 when worship began in a cottage in a cottage in the town. Or it could date from 1690 when John Cape, Elisha Cape, William Tymon and William Haywood, living in Wellington but members of Taunton Baptist Church, were meeting for worship in one another's houses in Wellington.
It could have been in 1694 when they decided to meet regularly at Haywood's house in Cheslton. Or it could have been in 1739 when the Wellington group separated from the Taunton group. But church planting often produces these kind of questions and often the solution is to look to formal moments in a church's history.
Thus it may be right to consider the date in September 1697 when the group at Haywood's house had become too large and they had to move to a rented house in South Street, Wellington. This site is some distance up South Street from the church's current location on property now owned by Wellington School.
We have some historical photo's of the life of Wellington Baptist Church, and you can view them by following this link:
